The Heart of your Sauna the Sauna Heater

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Ian Henman The sauna heater, it’s the life and blood of any sauna if you intend on enjoying it for it’s heat rather then just a nice quiet place to sit and think. Sauna heaters have come a long way from the days back in Finland when they built a fire in a cave and enjoyed the heat it gave off in the enclosure. While you can still get wood burning sauna heaters, most health clubs and home sauna owners opt for something a little cleaner, and more up to date. It was in the 1950’s that the electric sauna heater first came to market. It was with this sauna heater that the sauna began to catch on around the globe in health spas, and homes. It heated up reasonably quickly compared to a wood fired heater, and rid the awful smoke that was also associated with wood burning. By using an electric heater sauna users were able to enjoy both a wet or dry sauna experience. Along with electric came propane and gas fired sauna heaters, functioning in much the same way except deriving their heat from a gas burner rather then an electric element. They produced fast heat, but were a little more expensive to use. Not to mention the sauna required special plumbing to handle the gas lines, and people weren’t especially keen on having a gas line inside their home. Then came todays best solution an infrared, also known as a FIR infrared sauna heater. By far it was the furthest technological advance that occurred with the heaters that had come before it, and offered the safest and most efficient to be used in a home sauna. The biggest advantage an infrared sauna heater offered was it heated the individual in the sauna but not the heat around it. The waves the heater emitted (while similar to a microwave, but not dangerous) it heated the tissue, and below the tissue surface, but left the rest of the air in the sauna reasonably cool. This meant less electricity, and as we soon came to discover more medicinal properties. By heating below the skin level the infrared heater helped to increase blood circulation, detox the body of toxins, and reduce fatigue and aches/pains. Said to also penetrate the organs, and deep tissues it offers healthy side effects to any one suffering from poor circulation, and multiple other medical conditions. While this is more of a natural medical technique, before using an infrared sauna you should consult with your doctor, to ensure you will not experience any ill side effects. For most people a sauna provides a relaxing environment, but it’s always safe to fend on the side of caution. Loan Officer Marketing: Using Case Studies to Improve Your Credibility

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Jeffrey Nelson Many people use case studies in their business, but few loan officers use case studies as part of their loan officer marketing materials. If you are looking for a way to differentiate yourself from your competition, a case study may be the perfect answer. A case study accomplishes three things: it identifies a problem; it shows the solution; and it documents your performance. You offer proof of performance with a case study and sway skeptical agents. Effective case studies are structured using a common formula. Three Section Case Study The first section of your case study describes a very specific problem. This section has to draw the reader in, it has to be something that the agent can relate to, a problem theyve experienced. Be careful not to offer solutions in this section. This entire first section is about developing a complete understanding of the problem. This is where most loan officer marketing materials go wrong: they dont describe problems, instead just focus on solutions. Solution focused marketing is sent out in the masses to Realtors. You will not capture their attention with materials that look just like every other loan officers. The second section of the case study describes exactly how this specific problem was solved. It implies (but doesnt directly say) that by using your services, you could solve the problem for them too. In this section, you want to be specific in your solution and very personal, written in first person (I, me, mine, etc.) The last section describes the results of the action. These results must be very specific, they need to be tangible and measurable. Its one thing to say you saved a client thousands of dollars, its another to say you saved the client $3,000, or that you closed the loan 4 days ahead of the original closing date. If you arent specific, your solution will not be taking seriously. Focus on Benefits Focus your case study on how your service addressed a specific issue. This issue is the backbone of your case study. You dont want to bring in descriptions of other problems because it dilutes the message. Incorporate statistics, charts, tables and figures to reinforce where appropriate. Detail your Return on Investment. Explain how your service pays for itself. For instance, client referrals doubled in 2 months. Contain Costs. Show how working with you keeps costs contained. This is especially important to those agents that are spending way to much money on their marketing efforts and are frustrated with the cost of acquiring new leads and clients. Explain how your service helped other agents reduce their fees, such as reducing their marketing spending. Reduce barriers. Showing your solution to problems will improve operations. Give examples of how it can fit into their already existing business process. For instance, you provide the agent with up to date information or status checks through weekly emails, etc. Create Visual Appeal In all your loan officer marketing materials, create a graphically appealing format. You want something that is easy for the reader to scan through, something that doesnt overwhelm, and something short and to the point, about 300 to 500 words. With a little creativity and attention to detail, you can create a case study that solves problems and brings Realtors knocking at your door. How To Choose The Perfect Wedding Reception Gift

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Joe Palladino When trying to choose a good wedding gift you may feel lost. It helps to have some guidelines when trying to pick out the best wedding gift. Instead of ambling about the store aimlessly you can have a good idea what you are looking for. Having a main idea of what you want to buy helps the process go smoothly without hassle. Considering the couple’s wants and needs, your relationship to the couple and your budget will help you to make the right wedding gift choice. Many couples now use store registries to let guests know what they buy them for their wedding. Registries list items the couple has chosen throughout the store that they want. If someone has bought something from the list it is taken off, so you know when you look at the list that nobody has bought the items. Most lists will include the number of each item the couple wants. If the couple lists they want four wine glasses, you could buy two and let someone else get the other two. Registries are also nice because you can quickly see what to buy and be out of the store in a matter of minutes. Of course there are some not so good things about registries. They are computer-based, so sometimes you will not be able to access them. Also if the wedding is out of town for you the store the couple is registered at may not be easily accessible to you. If the couple has registered and it is convenient for you this is the easiest way to chose a good wedding gift. Another consideration is your personal relationship with the couple. Base your gift on how well you know them. An acquaintance from work isn’t expected to buy as extravagant a gift as a best friend would. If you only know one of them you should still buy a gift they will both use and like. If you really have no clue about what they want or need you can give money or a gift certificate with a nice card. Make sure your gift is appropriate and useful. Any gift is appreciated, so do not feel as if you have to give the best gift ever. Your budget is always a consideration when shopping for a wedding gift. Nobody expects you to bankrupt yourself when buying them a wedding gift. Set an amount you can comfortably spend and stick to it. If your budget is small just be creative and buy what you can. If you’ve checked out the registry and nothing on it fits your budget then buy the couple something useful, but simple. For example a bucket of cleaning supplies would be appreciated by any new couple, but wont break the bank for you. The couple will be more grateful that you came to their wedding then worried about how much you spent on their gift. Keep in mind these helpful pointers to choose a wedding reception gift that will be appreciated by the couple. You should look at their registry, if you can, consider your relationship with them and keep your budget in mind so that you choose a nice gift that works. Never worry that the couple will not like your gift or think you are cheap. As long as your intentions are good, they will love anything you give them. Not Readily Mobile

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Mike Stripe There are certain cases in the criminal justice system where the circumstances are extremely unconventional and exigent i.e. extraordinary or unusual like the cases where the suspected vehicle in not readily mobile. Readily mobile vehicle means the vehicle, which is at the time in the running position, or it is able to move. A not readily mobile vehicle refers to the stationary vehicle or a position of vehicle in which it cannot move like if a car is surrounded or stopped by police or when there is no driver in the car. Here we would discuss three different situations where there was probable cause to search the suspected vehicle that wasnt readily mobile. 1. In this situation, the police officer stopped a car, which was not following the traffic rules and asked the driver to give the license and registration number. When the driver was giving him the documents, the officer smelled a strong odor of drug. Not only this, the drivers hands were shaking badly when he handed the documents to the officer. The officer checked that the car wasnt stolen but the persons inside it had criminal records. So, that was the probable cause to search the vehicle. He called backup and then asked the defendant to search the vehicle but he declined. Due to his declination, the officer became definite that he was trying to hide something. When the other police unit arrived, they check the car, found the drug and defendants got arrested. In this case, the car wasnt in the readily mobile condition because the police had stopped it. And it was stopped not for searching but for a traffic ticket. 2. A more precise situation of searching a not readily mobile vehicle may come from this case. In this case, the car was standing in idle condition in a high-crime area. The police had already got some hint that a car similar to that one is missing and has some drug related objects. The police on finding the car standing there got suspicious and opened the car and searched it with the help of backup unit. During the searching the police had found 5 kilograms of marijuana, which was hidden inside the floorboard of the car and a pistol lying in the plain view at the back seat of the car. The police took the car into custody and pressed charges. This is a very precise condition of searching of a not readily mobile vehicle and it also had probable causes to search. First, the police had already the report of a missing car similar to that one and secondly the car was standing in a high crime area. Third, the evidence was found in the plain view of the police officers. 3. In this case, the police got suspicious of the car when it was broke a stop light. But then the car got parked in a neighborhood. The person got out of his car and walked towards his house but the police officer called him back and sensed a very strong smell of cologne and his nervousness. The officer was also aware of his previous drug trafficking record. The police called the backup, searched the not readily mobile car and found what they were looking for. In this case also, there were probable causes to search the car when it wasnt readily mobile, as no body was in the car and the ignition was not on either. The main cause of search was the smell that was indicated by the dog, which later on proved to be right. Playing Games Does Not Help Your Weight Loss Efforts

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Winston Ng Have you ever wondered why some fat people can be playing tennis, swimming and jogging often, yet they never lose weight? Many overweight people began playing tennis, walking, running or swimming because they were told that these activities are aerobic and therefore, beneficial to weight loss. So, is it really true that aerobic activities promote weight loss? Technically it is true that aerobic programmes do help. However, what constitutes an aerobic activity is the real issue of contention. In recent years, any weight loss program must include an aerobic activity component. Hence, many sports advocates attempt to remake their sport to appear to be an aerobic activity to ride on this wave of popularity. The tennis, jogging, walking, running, swimming, golf industries all want a share of this aerobic market. However, the truth is that no sport can EVER be classified as an aerobic or non-aerobic activity. Lets review tennis and jogging as examples: Tennis This activity is far from being aerobic by virtue of the fact that the game mainly comprises of start-stop movement patterns. A player waits for the ball and rushes to return. He then watches and braces himself for the ball to be returned. Adrenalin rushes when our body constantly rushes back and forth in this staccato fashion. This fast, responsive process is managed by our anaerobic (non-aerobic) sympathetic nervous system. Tennis is definitely not an activity for aerobic development. Jogging In typical jog fashion, joggers focus on speed as a benchmark of improvement. This is perfectly fine if you are training up for a running competition. However, in a weight loss program, an increase in speed results in decreased aerobic performance. Is there a speed threshold for aerobic activities? No, there is no universal speed threshold for aerobic activities. Nevertheless, there are independent bio-markers that we can depend on to guide us into our most aerobic zone. This is the core of this articles message. There is no such thing as an aerobic activity. There are only aerobic zones in an activity. The conventional aerobic guidelines for most sports and activities, are in specific numeric benchmarks, like 10km/hour or 50 laps in 1 hour, without due consideration to individual differences. Individual body differences range from physical size to blood aerobic conversion ability. Hence, an arbitrary level would force participants to achieve the 10km/hour (or whatever other benchmark). Then, in this process, they will constantly be subjecting their bodies to anaerobic (non-aerobic) stressors. Ultimately, when you embark on any jog, run or swim for weight loss, you have to ensure that you are doing it in the most aerobic zone of the activity. Maintain your activity in the most aerobic zone by following these simple guidelines; 1) Always ensure that you are able to day dream and think while running/ swimming/ jogging. If you are not able, it means that you are working out too hard for your current aerobic level. 2) If you are on land, you should be able to hear distant sounds as well as at least sounds from 3 sources, e.g. a car driving pass, television from a nearby house, chatter of passer-bys. If you are not able, it means that you are working out too hard for your current aerobic level. 3) The optimum level can be achieved by trial and error. When you feel comfortable walking/ running/ swimming at a particular speed, you increase it until you are not able to think or hear. Then, you drop it back down by a little to achieve the thought and audio equilibrium. 4) This zone will expand as you build up your aerobic base. Continually, test for this optimum zone and you will find that your workouts will be more efficient and satisfying. What happens now for tennis, golf, squash or any other games that does not seem to be very aerobically inclined? Keep on playing that game for the fun of it! Next, add an activity that that has a wide aerobic zone in your weekly activity. It would not add more than 10 minutes a day, but your fat burning rate will tremendously accelerate and, not to mention, your game play would improve too! How WLS Patients Defeat Ourselves: Learning to Play Ball

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Kaye Bailey I have a dog, Andie, who loves to play fetch. When he hears me say, “Lets play ball!” he is beside himself with joy jumping, wiggling and hopping. I take that tired old tennis ball and throw it as far as I can. In short order he is back to me ball in mouth and tail wagging. And thats the end of the game because Andie cannot bring himself to drop the ball for me to throw again. I tell him, “Andie! I cannot throw a ball with a dog wrapped around it.” He wags his tail and waits. Andie is his own worst enemy. By wrapping himself around the ball he prohibits himself from actively being engaged in the game he so loves. As a matter of course I believe WLS people become our own worst enemies now and again we wrap ourselves around the ball (WLS) and impede our own progress and joy in the game of living well. Handwritten on my calendar January 2002 there are 24 frowning faces. That means for 24 of the 31 days that month I was sick (vomiting or dumping). That month was a test of will: me against my gastric bypass surgery. In hindsight I believe I engaged in self-destructive behavior to prove once and for all that WLS was a punishment and I the victim. Night after night I prepared meals with known culprits: rice, starch and sugar. Night after night I sat to the table and told my husband, “I sure hope I dont get sick tonight.” And then I would deliberately eat too much to fast and rush headfirst into the bathroom to hurl. If I didnt vomit surely I would dump from creamy dairy sauces or “just this once” desserts that I ate because I deserved them; after all, victims deserve a special treat to soothe their suffering. So there I was, 28 months out of surgery maintaining a healthy weight and I wrapped myself around the ball (WLS). I was my own worst enemy I wish I knew what “clicked” and how I learned to drop the ball and enjoy the game. On the February 2002 calendar there is but one frowning face drawn. Perhaps turning the calendar page allowed me to start fresh. Maybe my husband gave me some well-deserved tough love and said you cannot continue to destroy yourself this way. Perhaps I was just sick of being sick and I surrendered to the surgery; I quit wrapping myself around the ball (WLS). If I did in fact surrender, dare I say it was sweet surrender? When I accepted the parameters of the lifestyle surgery imposes and when I stopped trying to outsmart the surgery I was liberated from being a victim and became an empowered survivor. My goodness! I had survived the medical condition of obesity; personally chosen my lifesaving treatment and now had this wonderful healthy life to live. So what if I couldnt eat a few foods I used to love? So what if I had to eat in a slow deliberate manner? So what if I never felt the familiar old comfort of food gluttony? None of these things mattered any more when I became actively engaged in living a healthy life. Now, I would love to sit here on my high horse and tell you since that dark January 2002 Ive never engaged in self-destructive behavior, but that would be dishonest. There are many frowning faces marked on the calendar between then and now. The good news is they show up less frequently and never day after day. Unfortunately, some days I am my own worst enemy. For example, last Thursday (August 11, 2005) I ran the daily errands and while at the supermarket purchased a giant frosted chocolate brownie. My intent was to eat it when I arrived home while I worked on this very newsletter. Can you imagine writing a newsletter about WLS while eating a giant frosted chocolate brownie? Insanity! I justified that with my husband out of town and me feeling lonely I deserved the comfort of a delicious brownie and if I did get sick nobody would ever need to know; it would be my little secret. Remember, Im a former sneak eater. By the time I arrived home I was so disgusted and angry with myself I immediately unwrapped the brownie and chucked it in the big curbside garbage container to be contaminated and inedible. I knew better than to eat it, but I also knew I had to render it inedible to get it out of my thoughts. I never tasted one crumb of that brownie. I am both ashamed and proud of this moment. Ashamed that I actually bought the brownie with the intent to “comfort” myself to sickness. But I am proud I stopped short of doing just that. So here I sit on my humble horse bearing the truth; occasionally Kaye Bailey a self-proclaimed WLS success - still engages in self-destructive behavior. I have come far from the harmful behavior of January 2002, but I have a long way to go. Id love to say there is a magic finishing line which when we cross we never wrap ourselves around the ball again. But it just doesnt exist. Weight loss surgery is for life. It takes constant vigilance and self-monitoring to ensure we are survivors, not victims. To myself I say, “Kaye! You cannot succeed with WLS when you wrap yourself around it. Lets Play Ball!” Now, if we could just get Andie to quit wrapping himself around the ball life would be bliss! Are You a Marketing Octopus, or a Marketing Worm?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Andre Bell One of the greatest challenges to effectively marketing a business is determining which marketing method is best for your business. Most people look at what their competitors are doing to market their businesses and then simply imitate that, whether good or bad. The best marketing strategy does not involve selecting only one or two marketing approaches that we see others using. The best marketing approach resembles an octopus. An octopus is very effective at catching food with eight limbs. If the octopus loses one limb it may momentarily lose some of its strength and agility, but it adapts and continues on as an effective hunter and predator. Its the same with marketing your business. The more marketing approaches you use simultaneously the more successful you can become and the easier it is to continue growing your company. You will continue to thrive despite the challenges facing others. No setback in any one marketing approach will ever devastate you or pose major problems. Despite this, many companies use no more than two or three methods at most to bring in business. Few realize that there are over 100 methods for bringing in new business, for increasing web traffic, for selling more to existing clients, and for increasing repeat sales that their competitors are not using. They basically imitate worms in their marketing attempts. A worms approach to life is singular. It does not use multiple limbs because it has none. Its existence is slow and labor-intensive. Very unlike an octopus. The great thing about this is that most competitors are making this same mistake. They may be too busy, too shorthanded, or too myopic to do much more than hand out boxes of business cards and sit around talking fish stories of the one that got away. That is a marketing approach to avoid. Instead use as many marketing methods as make sense for your industry, your market, and your company. Then you will become a marketing octopus while your competitors remain marketing worms. Where can you find a listing of more than one or two marketing methods? Andr Bell has authored the book, “101 Marketing Secrets Revealed”. How The Motto “Be Prepared” Can Help You Lose Weight

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Bill Herren Be Prepared. For the Boy Scouts it means you are always ready in body and mind to do your duty. How can you use this motto to help you in your weight loss efforts? I am of the school of thought that starvation is not the way to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle. My thinking has always been to make the right choices in the foods we eat. For many people, it is not overeating that is their enemy-it is the wrong choices. This article is assuming you know the difference between good food choices and bad. There are many articles that can be found on making proper food choices. For example; have you ever been trying to diet and found yourself out around town running errands and then suddenly so hungry you could not hardly stand it? Or have you ever been at work and your workmates want to go to the local Mexican restaurant and you did not pack your lunch that day? Normally what happens is you swing into the local fast food joint or go with your coworkers to the restaurant and end up making bad choices. How can this be prevented? Answer: Be prepared. The above bad choice scenarios could have been avoided by being prepared. The first could have been prevented by carrying a meal replacement bar or shake in your vehicle with you. This could have curbed your hunger until you were home and in a position to prepare a nutritious snack or meal. The second could have been avoided by having a nutritious lunch packed and ready to eat at lunch time. You could have even carried it to the restaurant and enjoyed the company of your coworkers. The number one enemy of being prepared is time. I dont have time to pack my lunch in the evening! or I dont have time to cook in the evening! I have good news and bad news. If you are going to be prepared it is going to take time. The good news is that it does not have to be as time consuming as you may think. One way to save time and be prepared is to use meal replacement shakes or meal replacement powders. These can be carried with you wherever you go and mixed and consumed in a matter of minutes. Another way is to do your cooking when you have time. I know of one person that prepares 7 chicken breasts on Sunday night and puts them in Tupperware serving dishes along with brown rice and steamed broccoli. They just simply take one per day to work and have a very nutritious, weight loss friendly lunch. Some more ideas for being prepared in your weight loss journey: Have cans of tuna in your desk at work. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Do your cooking when you have time and cook enough for several meals. Keep meal replacement powders and meal replacement bars nearby. Purchase a Tupperware shaker Learn to like raw fruits and vegetables. These are very portable and hit the spot! These are just some ideas to get you started. I am sure you can think of many more. The important thing is to have foods around you that are delicious and nutritious and will help you reach your weight loss goals. If you cant stand to eat raw carrots then there is no sense in taking a bag to work You simply will not eat them. You will more than likely make a bad choice when hunger hits. Experiment around and find nutritious choices that are portable and that you enjoy. Do not let yourself reach the point of no return in your hunger. At this point most of us will eat about anything. Stay ahead of the game and be prepared. When hunger hits make wise choices and your body will respond in a favorable way. Remember; Be prepared and you will reach your weight loss goals. Organic Hydroponics - Simplified

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Kirk Gordon These days, it’s easy to get lost in the wealth of knowledge available on hydroponics cultivation. The dizzying collection of fertilizers, additives and supplement doesn’t necessarily help the situation. From foliage to root, there’s something for everyone and for every kind of situation. But is all this necessary to grow great crops? I think one may find that great results can be achieved through simplicity. Here I will show you how to reduce the stock pile of fertilizers and supplements to the bare “essentials,” while incorporating other products on an “only-as-needed” basis. Growing plants organically Plants require nutrients just like humans. There are three groups of nutrients that plant require to grow into healthy, vigorous plants: Primary, Secondary & Micro Nutrients (see: Plant Nutrient - Primary, secondary & micro nutrients). Organic applications require a bio-stimulant to increase fertilizer uptake. Bio-stimulants often contain humic acid, fulvic acid, trichoderma, and a host of good microbes and bacteria that promote growth. The nutritional requirement, however, is only a “single” component in growing healthy plants organically. Other aspect of organic hydroponics cultivation such as lighting, temperature, humidity, media et, all play a vital role in the plant’s overall health. Anything else, such as growth supplements and other additives should only be applied if there’s a deficiency or other problems to plants where those substance could resolve the situation. Never add a substance to your nutrient solution simply because you think “the more you put in, the more you’ll get out.” Additionally, some primary fertilizers may contain trace elements and you may not need to purchase a separate supplement of “micro nutrient.” The micro nutrients are only required in trace amounts. Childhood Obesity - Parents - It’s Your Fault Your Kids Are Fat

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Marie Lenay Rogus How often do you look at your overweight children and tell them they are too heavy? Do you tell them they have to stop eating so much? Do they feel guilty, embarrassed and not good enough because of it? Do you feel embarrassed for your child? Obesity in our children is rampant. Children are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. And guess what? It isnt their fault. Its your fault. Who buys the food and prepares the meals. Do you make a lunch for your child, or just give them money to buy whatever they want. And if you are buying the food and preparing the meals, and they are overweight and overeating, then they dont know how to eat correctly. So how can they make the good food choices if they dont know how? Here are some questions to ask yourself? Do you give your child cereal and juice for breakfast? What about Pop Tarts or breakfast bars? If so, you are taking their body out of balance and they are starting to develop insulin resistance, which is the bodys inability to properly process sugar. Cereal and fruit juices have such a high glycemic index that the body triggers insulin to bring down the sugar levels. When that happens, they remain hungry and crave foods that are usually high in sugar for the rest of the day. The body cannot properly process the sugar overload. The cells are too full of glucose, so they close down their receptors and send the sugar directly into fat storage. (For more information on this process and how this leads to the formation of cholesterol, see the link below.) You may think that the milk with the cereal will curb the sugar, but if your child is overweight you probably purchase non-fat milk. Its the fat in milk that helps modify the insulin response and curb hunger. Maybe you are fixing your child a peanut butter and jelly on white bread sandwich for lunch. Sometimes you give your child a banana with the sandwich. Nutrition experts on diabetes say that combining peanut butter with white bread increases the sugar level and strongly advise diabetics from having this combination. Peanut butter with celery or an apple is extremely nutritious and high in protein and fiber. A banana is extremely nutritious, but if your child is overweight, give them only a half, or slices of it mixed with other fruit because of the high glycemic value of the banana. An apple or pear or orange is a much better choice. The fiber is high and the glycemic values are low. Am I getting your attention? What about white bread (or wheat bread made with enriched flour)? Many children prefer white bread because thats all they know. Its light and fluffy and turns to sugar very quickly in the bloodstream. Look for stone ground whole wheat on the label to know that the bread nutrients are not tampered with. Food for Life has some wonderful bread made from sprouted grains that are nourishing, are filled with necessary B vitamins, and taste good. Your child probably couldnt even eat a whole sandwich, because bread rich in food value is filling. Speaking of white flour, you wouldnt ever just eat a teaspoon of white flour. Its really dead food. It has no food value. Are you really going to count the so-called enriched flour? This is such a joke on us. Flour manufacturers take out all of the real nutrients from the grain and add in some synthetic vitamins and call it enriched. Anything we make with it is made with shortening, which is a transfat. If we didnt add salt or sugar to it, the taste would be unpalatable. All white flour quickly turns to sugar in your bloodstream which raises the insulin to bring the sugar level down. Often its brought down too low so you get uncontrollably hungry. Is one piece of white bread enough for you? Dont you usually want more? Do you feed your child macaroni and cheese, and other pastas as a food staple because its easy to make and your kid likes it? Perhaps you serve it with a roll or crackers? Maybe you give your child fruit juice with it or a soft drink. Do you give them enough pasta to fill them up and add a small piece of meat and vegetable to the meal and think its balanced? What about potatoes? Kids love French fries and mashed potatoes. Potatoes in moderation are a good vegetable, high in potassium. But we serve potatoes as a staple, and potatoes are a high glycemic food that quickly turns to sugar in the bloodstream. How many times has your overweight child had white or enriched bread, pasta, crackers or potatoes this week? A child in normal sugar balance does not crave sugar and isnt stimulated by the idea of cookies, cakes, etc., unless its been longer than 3-4 hours since they have eaten. This is the time the sugar level drops naturally to signal hunger. How can you help? What can you do thats different? You can help your child get back into balance by following some of these weight loss tips: The most important thing to do is get rid of all snack foods and cereals high in carbohydrates and sugar. Get them out of the house! Then give your children 3 moderate meals and 2 planned protein-type snacks per day. Think protein for breakfast. Give them a hard-boiled egg, or any type of egg. Buy good, stone-ground or multi-grain bread. It has around 4 grams of protein. Put one fried egg on the bread. Use Smart Balance or a good new margarine without transfat with high omega 3 in it to cook the egg and put on the bread. Regular butter is also good for you. You can make French toast. Use low-sugar syrup. Give them a piece of bread with cottage cheese on it and a dollop of low-sugar jam. SmuckersTM has some excellent ones. Add a few walnut pieces. Melt some cheese on bread. Add low-fat milk and some fresh berries or apple or orange slices and you have a wonderful, nourishing breakfast that will give your child energy and help them concentrate. For lunch you can make a sandwich with one slice of whole grain bread, lunch meat and cheese and put mustard or butter on it. Add a piece of fruit and a handful of nuts. Have them buy milk at school. The 100 calories in milk is much better than a diet coke. Calcium has been proven to increase weight loss, and the protein will prevent the sugar drop. Ideally, your child should have protein as a snack 3 hours after each meal. Preferably the protein should have a little carb with it such as apple and cheese or peanut butter and apple or celery, cottage cheese and fruit, nuts, or plain milk or yogurt, or ham slices rolled up with cheese or a pickle. Yogurt sweetened with artificial sugars may stimulate the appetite. You will have to experiment. When your child comes home from school, or before dinner, have a vegetable platter ready with sliced zucchini, red bell pepper, olives, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, celery, carrots, turnips or fresh shelled peas and whatever else you want to put with it. Serve it with salsa, bean dip or ranch dressing. This is a great way for your child to learn to love vegetables. They like the crunch, and the dips add flavor. For dinner, think protein. Have any meat with vegetables and a little salad with dressing or fresh cut up fruit. If you make the vegetables fun to eat, children enjoy it. Slice zucchini lengthwise, wrap it in a paper towel and microwave it for 2 minutes. Then spray on Smart Balance or another butter substitute. Add some salt, pepper and herbs. Its delicious and easy to eat. Give them cut up fruit whenever they are hungry between meals. It takes longer to eat fruit that is cut up, like an apple or orange or pear. A good snack for after dinner is milk with fresh or frozen berries whipped up in a blender. Use one or two teaspoons of sugar. It only has 17 calories per teaspoon. Or use low-sugar syrup with it. For fat to burn efficiently during sleep, it is important not to eat for 11 hours between dinner and breakfast. Sleep is very important for proper weight loss. It may take up to five days to get the cravings for carbohydrates out of the system. Move toward it gradually to make it easier for your children to stop overeating. Once you start following these suggestions, you should notice not only weight loss, but less hyperactivity and irritability in your childs manner. They also should have more energy. Above all, remove the words fat, diet and overweight from your vocabulary when you speak to your children. What we focus on is what we become. Our self-talk becomes self-fulfilling prophecy. Children, especially those under eight years of age, take everything they hear as a programmed suggestion. What they hear becomes their belief system, especially if they feel emotionally hurt in any way. (C) 2006 - Marie Lenay Rogus Lenay Rogus has been a hypnotherapist since 1995.
