“So… Which One Do I Use for My Arthritis, Doctor… Heat or Ice?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Nathan_Wei] Nathan Wei Heat has long been used to provide temporary relief of arthritis pain, and is used in many different forms. Contrast baths, whirlpools, electric pads, microwaveable gel packs, hydrocollator packs, infrared lamps, and hot showers are some of the different techniques used. Even warm tap water probably will meet some of your needs for heat therapy at home. Heat can provide temporary relief of pain and stiffness, and can prepare you for physical activity or exercise. For example, morning stiffness is a common problem for many people with rheumatoid arthritis. Because your body has been still during the night you may need special help to get going in the morning. The following combination of techniques using heat can reduce the length and the severity of morning stiffness: 1. Sleep in a sleeping bag (which helps retain body heat) or with an electric blanket (following the manufacturers instructions). 2. Take your aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medication an hour before you get out of bed in the morning. (Keep a few crackers at your bedside to take with the medication to avoid stomach irritation.) 3. Take a warm shower or bath immediately after you get up. 4. Then do limbering-up exercises after your shower or bath while you still feel warm. Safety is important in choosing the form of heat you use. You should take great care to avoid burns or electric shocks. Heat must be used with much caution on any area of the body with poor circulation or where you cannot feel heat or cold normally. It should not be used over areas where your skin is fragile or broken. Only mild heat is necessary to get results. You are aiming for a temperature just slightly above body temperature, and you do not have to apply heat for a long time. You will get full benefit by using heat for 20 minutes each time. Moist heat is any technique in which water is used to conduct the heat, such as a bath or shower or hydrocollator packs. People with arthritis prefer moist rather than dry heat, such as a heating pad. Moist heat penetrates more deeply than dry. You will have to try both and see which is more effective and convenient for you. Heating pads are available which provide either moist or dry heat, but they should be chosen and used with care. Make sure the pad is approved by the Underwriters Laboratory. Look for those which have temperature control switches; those without temperature settings get hotter and hotter until you switch them off. When using a pad, never lie on top of it and make sure you do not fall asleep while it is on. Severe burns can result! It may be wise to use a timer during the treatment. Check the instructions on use carefully. Regularly inspect the pad for any cracks in the plastic cover. Hydrocollator packs are canvas bags containing silicone gel which retain heat for a long time. You can buy them in different shapes at pharmacies. Some people like them because they lose heat more slowly than most wet compresses. The pack is heated in water, wrapped in 8 to 10 layers of heavy toweling and placed over the painful joint. The pack is heated in a large pot of water and placed on heavy towels. Place the surface with the thickest layer of toweling over the part to be treated. Keep in mind that hydrocollator packs do have drawbacks. They are not practical if heat is needed for several joints, because each pack can be used for only one part at a time. They are also cumbersome to use and may be too heavy placed over a painful joint. If your hands are affected by your arthritis, it may be difficult for you to remove the heavy pack from the water with the tongs. So you may need help. Again, you must be very careful about burns. If you decide to try such a pack, follow the manufacturers instructions carefully. Microwaveable gel packs are popular. Follow the instructions carefully or else the bag containing the gel may leak or even worse explode and cause serious burns! Physical therapists sometimes use melted paraffin as a means of applying heat, particularly to the hands. There are units available for home use as well. Because they involve high temperatures, paraffin baths should be used with caution. Patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis involving the hands often find paraffin to be helpful. You can buy nylon and spandex gloves which can reduce morning stiffness of the hands for some people when worn at night. The gloves are available in both mens and womens sizes. It is important to wear adequate, warm clothing in cold weather. Some people find that knitted, woolen or fleece pullover cuffs on painful joints, especially the knees, ankles and elbows are helpful in keeping the joints warm and more comfortable in cold weather. Some people with arthritis find that heat does not help them. In fact, the reverse is often best-cold compresses. Cold may be especially effective when active inflammation produces severe pain and joint swelling. Only trying different modalities will enable you to find out which is best for you. It is easy to make a cold pack by filling a small plastic bag with a few ice cubes. A bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel can be used. Place any cold pack over the painful joint with a layer of terry cloth toweling in between. The same precautions that apply to the use of heat should be observed when using cold. The maximum benefit is achieved in less than 20 minutes. You may wish to repeat this application several times a day. For many people with arthritis an effective approach is alternating warm and cold water applications, a process called contrast baths. It is most useful for a hand or foot which can be dipped in a large pot filled with water. If you decide to give it a try, use a thermometer to check temperatures. 1. Fill one container 2/3 full with 110 degree F water. 2. Fill a second container 2/3 full with 65 degree F water. 3. Put your hands or feet completely into the warm water for three minutes; then put them into the cold water for one minute. 4. Repeat step #3 two more times. 5. End the treatment with three more minutes in the warm water; then carefully dry the hands or feet. Finallyand very importantly with acute musculoskeletal pain, and particularly with injuries, always use ice. The formula to remember is RICE… Rest Ice Compression Elevation Dr. Wei (pronounced way) is a board-certified rheumatologist and Clinical Director of the nationally respected Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland. Exploring the Ins and Outs of a Themed Wedding

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Yolanda Nash When it comes to preparing and planning for the moment when two people join together as one, many couples aim to create the most fantastic experience. Themed weddings are a great way to present a memorable event, as well as have fun with a theme or subject matter that holds special meaning to both the bride and/or groom. Perhaps both share a love of classic literature and art or maybe love the water. Whatever the topic, it is now possible to incorporate all of these interests and subjects into a wedding theme to remember. The Different Types of Themed Weddings In regards to a wedding following a specific theme, there really is no limit to the kind of ideas that have been used or are waiting to become discovered. Some themed weddings carry significance between bride and groom, such as a planned event based upon a hobby they both share. Other weddings transport the married couple-to-be and their guests to another time period, where knights in shining armor ruled the land. The possibilities are endless as themed weddings may touch upon romantic historical characters, such as Romeo and Juliet or Antony and Cleopatra or create the surroundings of famous places about the world, such as Paris, Hawaii, and Las Vegas. Below you will find some of the aspects associated with a themed wedding to consider when planning such an event: Invitations To alert family and friends when the themed wedding will be held, invitations allow couples to highlight a bit of creativity. For example, Medieval or Renaissance-inspired weddings may utilize invites fashioned from ivory or beige parchment paper with details handwritten by a professional calligrapher. They may arrive rolled up and fastened by a metal ring, sealed with hot wax, or marked with a golden seal. Dress Themed weddings also allow bride and groom, and their guests to display a wide-range of clothing selections. Creating the feel of a royal Egyptian wedding and taking after Antony and Cleopatra, golden-laced gowns with spiral bracelets, heavy and exaggerated eye makeup, and snake-detailed crowns may appear. Medieval clothing is also popular in various themed wedding events. Attractively decorated kimonos are showcased in Japanese-inspired weddings, while Victorian, Tudor, and Edwardian gowns have graced the aisles of churches. Food Depending on the theme, food may range from a banquet-style arrangement of fruit-, olive-, and nut-inspired entrees for a Tuscan-style wedding to appetizers and desserts molded into shapes that correspond with the main idea. For instance, flower petal-dotted cookies and mini-cakes with pink, lavender, and light blue frosting make great accompaniments for a Spring-themed wedding. Tropical-themed weddings should utilize a wealth of fruity flavors in their meals and beverages. Smoothies, grilled fruit skewers, and exotic fruit salads are just some of the things that guests may look forward to. Decorations It is through the decorations that the atmosphere of a themed wedding is laid out. Tea lanterns add the feel of an Asian-inspired wedding setting, while paper dragons float from the sky with vibrant shades of red, orange, and green. Decorating the table, fortune cookies with personalized messages from bride and groom also set the scene. Silver accented goblets filled with wine as centerpieces for a Renaissance-themed wedding are sure to bring a smile to the faces of guests. To create the look and feel of a Hawaiian-inspired wedding, decorations may include coconuts, leis, palm trees, and explosions of color at every bend. Tables may showcase fresh pineapple, sand-filled trays of seashells, and exotic flowers. Special Touches Themed weddings also allow couples to live out fantasies as a Fairy Tale union may include bride and groom arriving on horseback or leaving in a horse-drawn carriage like Cinderella. Sometimes, a themed wedding can piggyback on a particular holiday. Halloween allows guests to come in their favorite costume, while Christmas-inspired weddings may showcase a winter wonderland theme with visions of silver and snow. Valentine’s Day opens up a wealth of decorative and edible possibilities, while everything green may dominate a St. Patrick’s Day union. Themed weddings are becoming an increasingly popular approach across the world as couples continue to push the envelope of creativity and fun to their limits. When it comes to creating a unique wedding day, brides- and grooms-to-be are only restricted by the limits of their own imagination. Yolanda is the owner of Yolandas Wedding Favors. Basil

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Mary Welty Basil(Ocimum Basilicum) Common Names: Common Basil, St. Josephworth, Sweet Basil Description: Basil is an annual plant found wild in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world; elsewhere it is cultivated as a kitchen herb. The plant is very aromatic. Properties and Uses: Antispasmodic, appetizer, carminative, galactagogue, stomachic. Basils usefulness is generally associated with the stomach and its related organs. It can be used for stomach cramps, vomiting, intestinal catarrh, and constipation. Basil has also been recommended for headaches.1 Basil is probably one of the most common herbs used today. Growing up in an Italian family, fresh off the boat as it were, basil was a staple in our household and not just for pesto. Basils earthy aroma permeated our house both inside and out. It grew in pots near the front door, was planted in the vegetable garden, and was prominently displayed on almost every windowsill in my grandmothers house. I know we used a lot of basil, but really. Today, in my own home, basil grows in the garden, in pots near the front door, and in the kitchen window. My grandmothers obsession with basil was apparently just a prelude to my own. Even someone who lacks a green thumb, and Im thinking primarily of myself, can grow basil. Throw a few seeds in a pot, and voila, you have basil. Its fast growing, easily harvested, and just as easily stored. Beyond the great fragrance, basil is just so plain useful. Rub a basil leaf across an insect bite to relieve the itch and inflammation, or steep the leaves in boiling water to make an excellent herbal tea to relieve nausea or that bloated feeling you get after eating a large supper. Basil is also an old folk remedy for bringing on delayed menstruation. Most of us already know that basil is a great addition to spaghetti sauces, but did you also know that basil was believed to ward of evil spirits? Basil was strewn across floors, because where it is no evil can live. It was also given as a housewarming gift to bring good fortune. Im including my favorite basil recipe for pasta. Its a sauce that makes up very quickly and has a wonderfully light, herbal flavor thats great during the hot summer months. Sauce: 1 stick of butter (not margarine) 8-10 fresh basil leaves chopped 6 large cloves of garlic chopped 1 small tomato peeled and coarsely chopped 1/4 cup coarsely chopped onion 12 oz. Spaghetti Saute garlic and onion in one tablespoon of olive oil, just long enough for the onion to turn transparent. Add butter. Cook over a low heat just until the butter melts. Add basil and chopped tomato. Saute this on low for one to two minutes. You do not want the butter to clarify, but to retain its creamy appearance. After the tomato softens, crush it with a potato masher, thoroughly blending the sauce. Allow this to simmer just until hot, then pour over 12 oz. of pasta, mix and serve immediately. A couple of hints: * To peel the tomato, drop it for a minute in the pot of water you have boiling for your pasta. The skin will peel away quickly and easily. * When preparing pasta make sure to use plenty of water, oil and salt. Many people feel their pasta lacks flavor, and it is generally because they fail to add salt to the water. When you sample the pasta to see if it is ready, the pasta should have a salty flavor. If not, add more salt to your water. 1. The Herb Book, by John Lust, Benedict Lust Publications, 1974 M.K. Welty hosts an informational website on herbs, herbal remedies and herbal gardening. Weight Loss and Dieting

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Ron Edward Dieting and weight loss often go hand in hand. It makes perfect sense actually. If you diet and watch what you eat, then you will lose weight. It should be that simple, but sometimes it just isnt. Dieting incorporates everything such as the weight loss plan you choose, the right and wrong ways to lose weight, habits that cause you to stop losing weight, how large your portion sizes are, how many fruits and veggies you should eat, and just about everything else that you can possibly imagine. When starting out on any weight loss program you need to know what kind of plan is best for you. It could be a group plan, a pre-packaged food plan, or a plan that just lowers your fat and calories and add exercise to your day. There are ways to lose weight the right way, as opposed to dieting in an unhealthy fashion. A new healthy weight loss plan should include: Counting calories Eating 6 small meals instead of 3 large ones Adding exercise at least 5 times a week to your daily routine Only weighing yourself one time a week, the morning is the best time Eating only small portions of the high calorie foods and larger portions of the fruits and vegetables Eating at a table and not in front of a television or a computer Focusing on why you are eating if you are not actually hungry Knowing what the bad fats and carbohydrates are in your diet Keeping track of your progress and what you put in your mouth Not quitting just because you have had a bad week on your diet As you can see weight loss and dieting are more than just something to do to pass time. At first it may seem time consuming to check all the nutritional labels, and comparing the foods for lower fats and calories, but it is well worth the effort. Soon you will see the weight dropping rapidly from your body if you incorporate all the above suggestions into your daily routine. Simple things like drinking more water, replacing the cookies with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. It is the little things that add up, and you just have to know where to start and what to do. It is also important that you get your mind in the right place when you start your diet. It is important that you know why you want to lose weight, and set a goal to do so. It is up to you to decide that now is the time to diet and loss weight. It cant be because anyone told you to, or because you want to look prettier. It has to be because you want to be healthier and have a better life for yourself. Yes, weight loss and dieting is hard work, but it something that you can do if you put your mind to it. Ron Edwards is an author, and website copywriter. Looking For A Younger Face

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Bobby Ryatt Secrets of how to look younger Facial Cosmetic Surgery We all would like to find that elusive fountain of youth, you know the one that will allow us to still gain intelligence but keep our youthful appearance. The face, of course is the first place that we would like to splash the magic water on so that we can have younger looking faces to meet the world. Our face is also the first place to show signs of aging. It starts subtly, with just a few crows feet around the eyes and maybe one little determined wrinkle usually in the middle of the forehead. Signs of aging are frustrating, and often lead us to look for alternative paths to facial enhancement. Facial enhancement is a surgical method of reducing the ever nasty signs of aging. It includes such procedures as brow lifts, face lifts, skin peels, and chemical peels. By focusing the cosmetic procedures on the face you can easily reduce the appearance of your age by anywhere between 5 and 20 years, depending on the facial structure and the initial appearance. In todays society, facial enhancement is becoming more popular than ever. At one time, facial cosmetic surgery was only considered for people with disfigurements or people over the age of fifty. Today however, people in their thirties are turning to plastic surgery to help reduce the appearance of their age. Secrets of how to look younger Effective and Simple Plastic Surgery One of the easiest ways to address aging concerns is a simple brow lift. Brow lifts are one of the most performed procedures because of their effectiveness and their relative ease, both for the plastic surgeon as well as for the recovery of the patient. A brow lift involves a very simple series of incisions that allow the surgeon to remove or smooth the tissue under the forehead. This results in a more open appearance of the eye, which automatically makes us look younger. It reduces or eliminates tiny wrinkles around the eyes that are attributed to aging. Brow lifts require minimal recovery time and are considered one of the least invasive forms of cosmetic surgery available. Their basic simplicity has allowed for very few complication errors and surgeons consider them nominal. With the onset of Botox and similar methods of wrinkle reduction, it would be reasonable to believe that brow lifts have lost their popularity. Botox is a treatment that must be repeated and often the signs of aging return prior to the next appointment. However, brow lifts are a fairly permanent solution to the again eye syndrome. Secrets of how to look younger Brows or Face? With the ease considered in the brow lift, why would one ever consider a face lift? A face lift is based on the same principle. The surgery however, covers a larger area of the face to include the eyes, mouth, and chin. A face lift removes or nearly removes facial wrinkles throughout the entire face. This makes it a procedure that many opt for, based solely on how much of the face is showing the ever dreaded signs of aging. How do you know which one is appropriate for you? A good plastic surgeon can certainly help in the decision making process, however if you look at yourself in the mirror you can probably asses the situation for yourself. Obviously if your mouth and eyes are showing wrinkles and sagging, it is more likely that you would benefit from an entire facelift whereas if all you really notice is some droop in the eyes, a brow lift should take care of the issue. Secrets of how to look younger Facial Reconstruction The beauty of cosmetic surgery is that often a person who has been disfigured either from accident, disease, or birth defect, has the opportunity for a better quality of life. Facial cosmetic surgery offers both children and adults the chance at a more positive life without the stigma of disfigurement. Science is now even making strides toward face transplants in an effort to relieve skin diseases and accident victims from the damage that was incurred. This method of facial reconstruction will offer people an amazing potential for a higher quality of life as well as relief from their pain. Secrets of how to look younger beautiful Reconstructing the Face Reconstructing the face often means more than just altering the position or quality of the skin. Often you can have your entire face reconstructed, for the cost. Facial reconstructions are painful and expensive. It involves breaking the nose, and the cheek bones in order to reposition the structure of the face. Typically these procedures are done to correct damage from an accident, and although are rarely done they can reconstruct an entire face for aesthetic purposes. There is a lot to be considered when performing such radical plastic surgery procedures. Skin is living tissue, and great care must be exercised in order to prevent the skin from dying after surgery. There are vascular issues that require extensive procedural expertise before even contemplating a total facial reconstruction. Total facial reconstruction, while immortalized in movies and television as a method for criminals to elude authorities from capture, is actually a method of restoration that has been used on patients of facial bone cancers. Often this horrendous disease attacks children and part of the facial bone must be removed. Being able to restore the face allows these patients a shot at a more normal life. Total facial reconstruction only reached the aesthetic cosmetic surgery field when there was enough evidence that procedures could be taught in medical school and perfected prior to operating on patients. Many surgeons however, refuse to perform them except in cases of disfigurement. There are much more conservative methods of making a face prettier. Secrets of how to look younger beautiful Chemical Peels Chemical peels are considered a less evasive procedure that has its benefits within the medical community. Though it is still classified as cosmetic surgery, Chemical Peels are known to be effective in removing pre cancerous age spots known as keratoses. Chemical peels are also used for age spots, skin tone, and finer wrinkles, but some insurance companies are now covering at least part of the procedure as preventative care because of its links in decreasing potential skin cancers. Skin that was badly damaged by previous acne can also benefit from chemical peels. It has been used to control acne as well. The idea of a chemical peel is to treat the skin with a special blend of chemicals that remove the outer layer. Chemical peels do not slow or prevent aging, but they can improve the look of skin as we age. Chemical peels are typically a process applied at weekly or biweekly intervals with less intensive methods applied at home in between peels. Chemical peels may result in pigment alterations of the skin, although they have not been known to bleach out the skin entirely. Typically the skin and the pigment production will adjust to the treatments over time. Sun exposure over in the first several months of treatment can result in severe burns. It is important to protect the new layers of skin not only from the sun, but from exposure to harsh facial scrubs as well. Chemically peeled skin should be treated as one would a babys fresh skin. What Is Compost And Why Does My Garden Need It?

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Anthony Tripodi Some people think compost is a just a bunch of manure. Others think it’s what happens to your body when you die and get buried, “My uncle Joe died last year and his body has been de-compostin’ ever since.” Compost is defined in the dictionary as “a mixture of decaying organic matter, as from leaves and manure, used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients.” That’s a great definition but it really doesn’t tell the whole story. It should say, “Compost is the greatest thing ever!!!” Well the dictionary probably won’t ever say that but I will. Compost is created when yard & food waste decomposes. Micro organisms & invertebrates (also known as little buggers) feed on the waste, live their brief lives, reproduce, die and then they become waste too. This repeating cycle is how the soil gets it’s nutrients replenished. Like Mufasa said, “We all have our place in the circle of life.” When it comes to compost, it ’s just a very small circle. Compost will happen on it’s own without any help from man. Look down at the ground in a dense forest. The leaves fall from the trees and decompose. This creates a rich soil that in turn feeds the trees. Compost just happens naturally and has been since the dawn of time. But man has figured out how to speed up the process. By mixing the right ratio of greens (grass clippings, coffee grinds, food waste, etc) with the right ratio of browns (leaves, hay, shredded newspapers, etc) and keeping the pile moist and well aerated you will create compost much quicker than nature. Are you still asking what’s the big deal about compost? Add some of this stuff to your garden bed and you’ll know. Your plants will grow bigger and healthier. Sure you could add fertilizers and get the same results, for now. You see synthetic fertilizers eventually break down and after a few years will leave the soil salty. At some point you won’t be able to grow anything without lots of that fertilizer (they planned it that way to sell you more). It’s like raising a crack baby at that point. Well maybe not that bad but you get the idea. Adding compost to the soil is creating healthy soil. You’re doing what nature is already trying to do but your just doing it faster and more efficiently. Compost is not only great for your plants but it’s great for your soil and even for the environment. They say that in the United States that 30% of all garbage is lawn and garden waste. Instead of putting those leaves and grass clippings out at the curb they could be composted. That would not only cut down on the space needed in land fills but it would make everyone’s gardens grow bigger, healthier and less dependent on synthetic fertilizers. I’ve described the benefits of compost and hopefully you’re ready to build or buy a compost bin and get started. Remember that nature is going to decompose your yard waste at it’s own pace anyway. Why not lend a hand and speed up the process. Anthony Tripodi is the webmaster of WatchItRot.com - The Compost Guide. Hair Highlighting 101

Friday, September 14th, 2007

By John Morris Highlighting can add the illusion of depth, volume and texture to your hair. The process involves coloring some strands of your hair - making it lighter or darker, depending on your overall look (color of your skin, eyes, hair) and your desired look. Your highlights should compliment your natural color, not giving it an odd contrast or contrived color. Highlighting is also a great way to start if you have doubts in coloring or dying your hair. Three things to remember before highlighting: 1. Go light or go home Usually, in using a color for highlights, you go two or three shades lighter than your original hair color. Going beyond three shades will look extremely unnatural and peculiar. 2. Condition your hair to avoid drying Deep condition your hair or use a clarifying treatment at least three days before highlighting because some chemicals in hair color can seriously dry your hair. After coloring, some prefer to shampoo immediately after. But, it is better to shampoo your hair a day after - this will help maintain the color. 3. Consider lowlights You also have the option to have lowlights with your highlights which can give your hair more dimension. Lowlights make your hair darker in shade. It will make the top of your hair look heavier than the bottom. But, it is best to go to your professional stylist when trying both highlights and lowlights. Tips for hair highlighting - Mix two or more colors. Experiment and be creative. Just remember to use the color mix once you combine them. - If you bought a highlighting kit, you can observe that the brush they use dont really give you much control. Flat acrylic brushes measuring - inch, which can be bought at art supply or hardware stores, give you a better grip thus making the highlights look more natural. - Always protect your skin from hair color because it contains chemicals that can be damaging. - Use latex gloves and make sure they fit snugly. - Apply highlights only to the top layer of your head to create that depth and dimension you want to achieve. Streaking Streaking is used for a sleeker and glossier effect. You can go for half-head or full-head. Half-head streaking gives your hair brighter effects done really close to the hairline. This is done through bleaching and wrapping small or thick strands of your hair in foil paper. While whole-head streaking involves bleaching and coloring the entire head, thus producing a blonde effect. Darker streaks are placed closer to the hairline. Both procedures need a touch-up every six to eight weeks before growth of new hair becomes noticeable. D-I-Y streaking is another method used for dry hair. Best results are seen for medium-brown to light-brown hair. A streaking kit is available at the shop, but it should include a rat-tail brush, toothbrush, a non-metal bowl for the bleach, foil paper and a couple of clips. To do, part a thin portion of your hair at the top part of the head using the comb. Place a 5 cm foil strip under it. Take the toothbrush with bleach and swathe over the parted hair. Cover it with foil strip. Take another part of the hair about 1.25 cm below and continue the process until the desired effect is achieved. Check the color of the wrapped hair - it should be golden. If not, reapply bleach and leave for a couple of minutes. While taking out the foil wraps, ask a friend to help you rinse with warm water to take off the bleach. Apply shampoo and conditioner after unveiling the wraps. Finger painting Finger painting is a method for a subtler effect. Run four fingers from your hairline to the back of the crown after dipping it in bleaching solution. Do it as if pushing back the hair from your face. Dont forget to use gloves. Follow the instructions at the back of the carton, like how long to leave the hair before rinsing, shampooing and conditioning. Shampoos The most practical and cost effective way to extend the duration of your highlights is the use of color tinted shampoos. Since these are temporary, you just stop using a certain color of shampoo if you dont like it or if you want to try other colors. You can even use them on their own, although the effect will be less.
