Dyson Vacuum Cleaners: Better By Design Or Better By Marketing?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Martin White Since the US launch of Dyson vacuum cleaners in 2003, they have taken the US market by storm. In fact, Dyson has been so successful not just in the US, but throughout the world - that Hoover, once the powerhouse of the vacuum cleaner industry, has rapidly lost market share. In fact, Hoover has experienced such a decline in profitability that it has been put up for sale by its parent company. But how has Dyson achieved this success? Is it due to superior design and functionality or is it the result of a slick marketing campaign? The real question is this: how sustainable is Dyson’s success? Marketing hype is OK in the short term, but can cost you down the line if customers do not become repeat buyers because they feel cheated by the initial sales pitch. On the other hand, if the Dyson range really does deliver, then customer loyalty will no doubt ensure long-term success. After much hard work and thousands of prototypes, James Dyson unveiled his first vacuum cleaner - the G force back in 1991. He’d tried to take the Dyson concept to all of the major players in the industry, but was politely shown the door at every turn. With a lack of funding to turn his dream into reality, he was facing bankruptcy. However, he caught a break by winning a Japanese design award and soon the G-Force was selling for $2,000 a pop there. This gave him the cash flow he needed to set up on his own and the popular DC01 model was launched in the UK in 1993. It was an instant smash hit and it took on the mantle of being the best selling vacuum cleaner in the UK within 2 years. Engineering and good design definitely played a hugely important role in the success of the Dyson. The Cyclone technology is at the heart of the Dyson concept, the claim being that there are no bags or filters to clog up and so there is no gradual loss of suction, as is experienced with traditional vacuum cleaners. Usability is also key and the Dyson is brimming with ergonomic features. The DC05, for example, is designed to balance solidly on your stairs. The latest Dyson, the DC15, is the subject of 182 patents and 3 years of R&D investment and offers “The Ball” technology. “The Ball” replaces the wheels and makes it easier to manoeuvre the vacuum cleaner around your house, around furniture and into nooks and crannies. No more back and forth, pull-push manoeuvres, now you can twist and turn! On the other hand, all of this gadgetry comes at a price. Not just a monetary price which is a significant factor - but the reliability of the Dyson range has been called into question. With all of these interacting parts and design features, it is little wonder that a 2004 survey by consumer magazine Which? placed Dyson vacuums at the bottom of the pile in terms of reliability. However, and perhaps counter-intuitively, the same study reported that Dyson users were most likely to refer the product to a friend! Could it be that a lack in long-term reliability is offset by a truly superior product that delivers on its marketing messages? And talking of the marketing messages, Dyson undoubtedly has a great campaign. Much of its initial success was built on the clear-chamber “bagless” concept. As it turns out, the fact that people can see the dirt being extracted from their furniture and carpets is enough to make them buy an expensive vacuum cleaner especially when they are encouraged not to store it away in the back of a cupboard because of the bold color scheme and futuristic exterior styling (think iPod or iMac for vacuum cleaners!) The Dyson really has been positioned as a trendy design statement. But who would have known? Far from being marketing genius (although it was) the campaign was built around the engineering and usability strengths of the product. Because the Cyclone technology delivers maximum power without degradation over time, it will pick up more dirt. The clear-chamber “bagless” concept was driven by a passion to demonstrate the power of the product, rather than as a marketing gimmick it just happened to be a stroke of genius! For all its success the jury is still out on how the Dyson will fare in the future. The time when customers start to think about replacing their existing Dyson will be make-or-break time in terms of the company’s future. But despite some concerns over the reliability of their machines, it seems that customers like what they see in the Dyson range of vacuum cleaners and believe that the Dyson is a superior product. 7 Simple Tips To Better Weight Loss

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Karl Warren In this article you will discover some simple, yet effective weight loss tips which will help you break your bad habits and fight off the cravings. When you can feel a craving coming on, brush your teeth… When your belly is not rumbling but your mind is telling you to open the refrigerator, it is time to unleash the toothbrush. When you are not physically hungry but you are craving food, brushing your teeth can work wonders. It is a little known fact that brushing your teeth can help the craving pass and you will no longer feel like eating. Next time you’re craving chocolate, give it a try. Old habits don’t die hard… It is easy to fall into a routine, for example - when you settle into your seat at the cinema, isn’t it nice to have a big tub of popcorn and a Coke to hand? When we begin to associate snacks with other pleasurable experiences, habits begin to form. Next time you visit the cinema, why not skip the popcorn? Try drinking Diet Coke or even water. You are allowed to eat, don’t starve yourself… Eating when you have a good appetite is always the best approach to dieting, if you wait until you are starving you will find that you eat more. If you deprive yourself of food, you are more prone to binge eating. Junk food and snacks always seem more appealing on an empty stomach. You actually NEED fat…Fat is an essential source of energy, however, there are good fats and bad fats. Good fats can be found in fish oil, oil from seeds, nuts and olives. Dairy products, red meat and fried food contain bad fats. Change your attitude to food… Did you know? Babies only demand food when they are hungry, they stop eating when they are full. As we grow up, we are ‘rewarded’ for good behaviour with treats such as sweets and biscuits - when we are older, we treat ourselves with chocolate and ice-cream… this is why we eat for comfort when we are upset. By understanding where this habit comes from, you can begin to combat it - why not treat yourself to a makeover or a new pair of jeans instead? What a perfect incentive to hit your weight loss goals. Don’t take yourself too seriously… Becoming fanatical about your weight can be counter productive, furthermore, you are more likely to succeed when you enjoy what you are doing. Let’s take jogging for example, it would be ridiculous to jog five mile per day if you simply don’t like jogging - in next to no time you would become jaded and probably resort back to not exercising at all. You should take time to discover the things you enjoy, try swimming, jogging or even cycling. Don’t be afraid to say no… Sometimes other people do not understand your goals. For example, you’re out to dinner and your friend exclaims “you must have dessert!” It can be difficult to say no. We don’t want to appear rude, but, do you ‘really’ need to eat dessert? If you’re not comfortable saying no, perhaps you could say “It looks great but I’m full, I’ll definitely try it next time.” It is a much kinder approach and rarely offends. Troubled Teens Programs

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Kent Pinkerton Troubled teens programs are intended to provide solutions to the ever-growing teen problems, such as depression, behavioral problems, oppositional defiant disorder, drug abuse, poor academic performance, etc. All programs aim at promoting personal growth through a focus on insight-oriented experiences. Many effective teen programs include behavior modification programs, outpatient therapy programs, day treatment programs, rehabilitation programs and wilderness programs. Behavior modification programs are ideal for teens who have social and emotional behavior problems. They are also good starting points for parents who want their kids close by and want to avoid placing their troubled teen into a setting that may create even more resentment and anger. The programs are designed to reinforce and reward appropriate behaviors, and to confront and redirect inappropriate behaviors. Outpatient therapy programs are a viable option for those who are already committed to recovery. They offer several treatment options such as individual and group counseling, family counseling, and substance abuse programs. Outpatient programs are relatively short termed and can be very beneficial. One drawback is that they are not designed for children with severe emotional or psychiatric problems. Day treatment programs are available for teenagers who were unsuccessful in outpatient settings. They usually deal with teens who have emotional and psychological issues. These programs are designed for teens who need intensive therapeutic support, but who do not yet need a residential environment. Parents prefer a rehabilitation program or center for their children suffering from drug or alcohol problems. These programs help the teen to become drug free through a medical program supervised by medical persons. Teens are usually not permitted to leave these premises until they are drug free. A wilderness program for troubled teens is considered as an excellent alternative to boot camps. Here, teens learn through natural consequences and positive peer relationships. The forested, mountain setting eliminates urban distractions and simplifies options to help teens achieve insight into their core values and accept responsibility for their choices. Wilderness camps also feature individualized treatment plans, flexible lengths of stay, master’s and doctorate level counselors, and a powerful family involvement component. Troubled teens programs may be the one answer to deal with the troubled teens, but selecting a program for them is extremely difficult and should be done very carefully. Troubled Teens provides detailed information on Troubled Teens, Schools for Troubled Teens, Troubled Teens Programs, Camps for Troubled Teens and more. Troubled Teens is affiliated with Teenage Boot Camps. Bird Flu (Avian Influenza) Pandemic, the Cytokine Storm: What Drugs Work and Don’t Work

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Steven_Petrosino,_Ph.D.] Steven Petrosino, Ph.D. What is a Cytokine Storm? by Steven P. Petrosino, Ph.D. and Angela L. Petrosino, MPH A cytokine storm, also called “systemic inflammatory response syndrome” (SIRS) is the systemic expression of a healthy and vigorous immune system resulting in the release of more than 150 inflammatory mediators (cytokines, oxygen free radicals, and coagulation factors). Both pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha, InterLeukin-1, and InterLeukin-6) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (such as interleukin 10, and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist) are elevated in the serum, and the fierce and often lethal interplay of these cytokines is referred to as a “Cytokine Storm”. The primary contributors to the cytokine storm are TNF-a (Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha) and IL-6 (Interleukin-6). The cytokine storm is an inappropriate (greatly exaggerated) immune response that is caused by rapidly proliferating and highly activated T-cells or natural killer (NK) cells. These cells are themselves activated by infected macrophages. The cytokine storm must be treated and suppressed or lethality can result. Acute respiratory viral infection results in a cytokine storm effecting the lungs, and subsequent damage to alveoli and lung tissue results in the lethality seen in more severe flu viral infections, especially those fatalities among young healthy adults. In the absence of prompt medical intervention to stop the “cytokine storm”, the lung will suffer permanent damage. Many of these patients will develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), i.e. will present with pulmonary edema that is not caused by volume overload, or a depressed left ventricular function. Deaths will usually result from multisystem organ failure, and not from lung failure. Sepsis, Viral Infections, and Cytokine Storm Sepsis is a severe systemic inflammatory response and is one example of a pathologic condition associated with “cytokine storm”. Sepsis is an often lethal hemodynamic collapse which is usually the result of a super infection by gram-negative bacterial endotoxins. Sepsis is also classified as septic shock syndrome (SSS). Cytokine storm can also result from viral infections such as influenza, and an exaggerated systemic immune response to that particular viral infection (designated a type A, subtype “H1N1″ virus) may have been the cause of high lethality seen in the influenza pandemic of 1918 to 1919. The great influenza pandemic was the most destructive pandemic in recorded world history, and killed more people (estimated between 20 to 50 million) than all casualties resulting from the first World War. Although the Spanish Flu pandemic affected an enormous percentage of the world wide population (up to 20% of the world population according to some sources), and killed between 20 and 50 million persons, no more than 5% of the people who contracted the Spanish Flu died (Brown et. al reported the highest death rate in India at 50 deaths per 1000 persons contracting the disease, or a five percent fatality rate). After 218 human cases of avian influenza (bird flu) have been confirmed world-wide (as of May, 2006), the lethality rate stands at 57%. Should this strain develop into a pandemic, and should it keep its current mortality rate, it has the potential to be 10 times more lethal than the 1918 pandemic. Is the World Health Organization Adequately Defending against a Potential Pandemic of Avian Influenza Avian Influenza (also called the “Bird flu”) currently is 10 times more lethal than the strain of Spanish Flu that caused the great influenza pandemic of 1918 and killed up to 50 million people world-wide, and it could become the most lethal flu pandemic of all history if the virus mutates allowing it to be more easily passed from person to person. Bird Flu patients die from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by the “cytokine storm”, and NOT directly from the virus. Neuraminidase inhibitors (i.e. Tamiflu, Relenza) are not proven effective for bird flu patients, although they have been recommended by the World Health Organization for this use, are currently used to treat almost all bird flu patients, and are being stockpiled by governments world-wide (including the United States) to treat a potential pandemic should the avian influenza virus undergo a final mutation which would allow it to be more easily passed from person to person. A treatment to prevent or reduce the autoimmune reaction (cytokine storm) associated with the bird flu is commercially available by prescription, but is not currently being recommended by the World Health Organization to treat these patients. Influenza A, The most lethal influenza and the precursor of all Pandemic Viruses Influenza viruses responsible for causing pandemics are influenza type A viruses which emerge as a result of a process called “antigenic shift. Antigenic shift causes an abrupt or sudden, major change in certain proteins on the surface of the influenza A virus (specifically the hemagglutinin or HA protein and the neuraminidase or the NA protein).Certain antigenic shifts may allow the virus to become more easily transmissible, more “contagious”. Once this type of shift occurs, wide-spread infection usually follows quickly. Antigenic shift is most dangerous when it occurs in a virus that has demonstrated high lethality, such as the H5N1 bird flu. History has recorded 10 pandemics of influenza A in the past 300 years. The sudden appearance of new influenza A virus subtypes during the 20th century has caused three pandemics, all of which spread world-wide within 1 year of first being detected. Influenza Pandemics of the 20th Century 1918-19, “Spanish flu,” [Type A, subtype (H1N1)], caused the highest number of known influenza deaths: more than one-half million people died within the United States (nearly half of the deaths were young healthy adults aged 20-40), and between 50 and 100 million people may have died worldwide. Most deaths occurred within the first few days after infection, some deaths within hours of symptom onset, and other deaths occurred later as a result of complications. Influenza A (H1N1) viruses still circulate today after having been reintroduced in the 1970s. Although called the “Spanish Flu” because the first widely reported deaths were in Spain, it probably originated in China.1957-58, “Asian flu,” [Type A, subtype (H2N2)], caused about 70,000 deaths in the United States. The “asian flu” was initially identified in China in late February 1957. Three months later, it spread to the United States with early reports of infection as early as June 1957.1968-69, ” Hong Kong flu,” [Type A subtype (H3N2)], was responsible for about 34,000 deaths in the United States. The “Hong Kong flu” virus was first detected in Hong Kong in early 1968 and spread to the United States within a few months. Influenza A (H3N2) viruses still circulate today. Both the 1957-58 and 1968-69 pandemics were caused by viruses containing a combination of genes from a human influenza virus and an avian influenza virus. The origin of the 1918-19 pandemic virus is not clear, but if its origin was in China as suspected, it could have similarly been caused by a genetic recombination of human and avian influenza viruses. This can more easily occur if humans are in close proximity to both live birds and pigs, as can occur in public markets in Asia. Osterholm reports the last influenza pandemic (1968) occurred 37 years ago, emerging in China. At that time China’s human population was 790 million, its pig population was 5.2 million, and its poultry population was 12.3 million. Today, these populations number 1.3 billion, 508 million, and 13 billion, respectively. The human and animal populations of other Asian countries have similarly increased exponentially, which has increased the chances for close contact between birds, pigs and humans in these countries, creating optimal conditions for the emergence of new viruses, such as the H5N1 subtype. On August 12, 2004, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health reported three confirmed human deaths to the World Health Organization (WHO) from confirmed avian influenza H5 infection. If the virus is confirmed to belong to the same H5N1 strain that caused 22 cases (15 deaths) in Vietnam and 12 cases (8 deaths) in Thailand in 2005, and human-to-human contact versus human to bird or human-to-swine contact is suspected, this may indicate that H5N1 has adapted to the point that it is transmissible and has the potential to cause the next pandemic. In May 2006, it was reported that a family of 7 died of the bird flu after having no detectible contact with an infected bird. If this is the case, the virus may have undergone a final mutation giving it the potential to cause a pandemic. What Are the Symptoms of the Bird Flu: Initial Presentaion of Influenza A (H5N1) Avian Influenza: Pulmonary: Radiographically confirmed pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), or other severe respiratory illness for which an alternate diagnosis cannot be establishedOne or more of the following: cough and/or sore throat and/or shortness of breath, AND a history of contact with poultry (e.g., visited a poultry farm, a household raising poultry, or a bird market) or contact with a known or suspected human case of influenza A (H5N1) in an H5N1-affected country within 10 days of symptom onset.DyspneaFever (temperature of >38C or >100.4F)Symptoms Of The Cytokine Storm: The end stage, or final result, of cytokine storm (SIRS) or sepsis is multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). The end-stage symptoms of the bird flu, or other infection precipitating the cytokine storm may include: hypotension tachycardia dyspnea fever (temperature of >38C or >100.4F) Ischemia, or insufficient tissue perfusion (especially involving the major organs) uncontrollable hemorrhage and multisystem organ failure (caused primarily by hypoxia, tissue acidosis, and severe metabolism dysregulation Oxygen free radicals, histamine, complement factor C5a, Beta-endorphin, thromboxane B2, and platelet activating factor are implicated in SSS. The major pro-inflammatory cytokines which are implicated in SSS are TNF-alpha, IL1, IL6 and IL8. Serum TNF alpha concentrations in excess of 1 ng/mL are frequently predictive of a lethal outcome, however serum concentrations of other inflammatory cytokines involved in the pathophysiology of Septic shock are usually not reliable predictors of the severity of the shock state or clinical outcome. These cytokines are released by macrophages following activation by bacterial endotoxins. Preventing and/or treating the cytokine storm associated with influenza with antiviral medications, prescription medications and vaccines that are approved (or may soon be approved) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Acambis Biotechnology Vaccine: Acambis announced on August 4, 2005 that it has entered into collaboration with a Belgian research centre to develop a single-dose flu vaccine that could offer permanent protection against all strains of both influenza A and influenza B, potentially offering protection against future influenza pandemics. ACE inhibitors and Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) [http://www.genomed.com/pdf/AT1RSARS.pdf ] make sense in the treatment of, and have proven to be [http://www.genomed.com/pdf/ACE_vertebrate_pathophysiology.pdf ] beneficial in treating the cytokine storm (the major cause of lethality in Bird Flu) of SARS. See also: PUBMED, [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Display&dopt=pubmed_pubmed&from_uid=9547740 ] The cytokine storm and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Amantadine (Brand name Symmetrel: Treatment of influenza type A-2, but not type B). This drug cannot treat the cytokine storm associated with avian influenza, and has not been tested in patients with the bird flu. Aventis Vaccine: Preliminary research suggests the influenza A vaccine developed by Sanofi-Aventis is effective against H5N1 avian flu virus. The NIH (US National Institutes of Health) reported on August 5, 2005 (New York Times) that preliminary tests have confirmed that an experimental vaccine in development by Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceutical Company appears to be effective in preventing infection with the bird flu (avian influenza virus). Researchers believe that the avian influenza virus, an influenza type-A, subtype H5N1, could trigger the next worldwide flu pandemic. Oseltamivir (Brand name Tamiflu: a neuraminidase inhibitor for treatment or prevention of both influenza type A and B, indicated for use within 2 days of symptoms). This drug cannot treat the cytokine storm associated with avian influenza, and has not been tested in patients with the bird flu. Most of the avian flu victims in SE Asia and Turkey received Tamiflu, and still suffered mortality rates exceeding 50%. [http://www.cytokinestorm.com/tamiflu.html] Tamiflu has been declared ineffective against the bird flu by a physician who has personally used the drug to treat 41 bird flu patients (19% of all reported cases to date). Prednisone and corticosteroids: Treatment of active disease may involve the use of corticosteroids. Rimantadine (Brand name Flumadine: Treatment of influenza type A, but not B). This drug cannot treat the cytokine storm associated with avian influenza, and has not been tested in patients with the bird flu. Zanamivir (Brand name Relenza: a neuraminidase inhibitor for treatment of both influenza type A and type B, indicated for use within 2 days of symptoms). This drug cannot treat the cytokine storm associated with avian influenza, and has not been tested in patients with the bird flu. Most of the avian flu victims in SE Asia and Turkey received Tamiflu (a drug similar to Relenza), and still suffered mortality rates exceeding 50%. Proper Usage of Essential Oils

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Michael Russell Every now and then, I think it is important to refresh our minds with how and why we use essential oils. This allows us to once again, regain our focus, and move forward in life with less stress and anxiety. It shows us the correct methods of using essential oils. It also gives us the background of where they come from, and how we obtain them. All of this is important, and goes a long way in the therapeutic healing of aroma. Many plants contain volatile compounds, i.e. essential oils, that we extract from the flowers, seeds, bark, roots, and even the peels. It is in these oils, which we extract, where the healing properties are contained. Some of these properties are antiseptic, warming, soothing, calming, stimulating, and antispasmodic. The quality of the oil depends on a few items. First, plant species ,i.e. the region, soil condition, and the climate in which the plant was grown. Second, the time of the day the plant material was harvested. And, third, the extraction method used and the storage. It is believed that plants grown organically or collected in the wild yield the highest quality oils. Extracting the oils is done through various methods, but steam distillation and cold pressing are the best. Avoid any synthetic oils or those extracted with chemical solvents. It takes a large amount of material for extraction, so this is a very labor intensive and expensive process. BUY from reputable places. Applications Steam inhalation: Add 5 drops of an essential oil to a bowl of steaming water. Drape a towel over your head and hold your face over the bowl. Breathe in deeply. This is especially good for sinus conditions. Dry inhalation: Put 1-3 drops of an essential oil on a cloth, and hold up to your nose. Breathe in deeply. Healing Compress: Add 5 drops of essential oil to 1/2 cup of hot water or cold water. Dip a cloth in the water, wring it out and apply where necessary. The hot press is good for cramps and the cold press is good for fevers and headaches, or even sunburns. Humidifiers: Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a humidifier or vaporizer. This will help fight symptoms of colds, bronchitis, and asthma. Herbal Sauna: Use essential oils in the sauna to aid the lungs and help strengthen the immune system. Add 5 drops of essential oil, such as tea tree, to 1 cup of water and pour over the heated sauna stones. Just a suggestion - if the sauna uses lava rocks on an electric heater, it may not be a good idea to pour water in this situation. Some Popular Oils Peppermint - soothes respiratory infections, aids circulation, fightsinflammation, relieves flatulence and indigestion. Tea Tree - Acts as a, antiseptic, is antiviral, is antibacterial, is antifungal, helps heal acne, sunburns, and even infections. Lavender - Is an antibiotic, soothes headaches, and helps heal wounds, and repels insects. Storage Tip Store essential oils in opaque glass bottles in a cool, dark place. Refrigerate citrus oils. Label clearly. Properly stored essential oils will keep well over a year. Please, just remember, keep all essential oils away from children. Using some of the above techniques and information, you can really use essential oils to have a more positive effect on your well-being. ——————————————————- Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Aromatherapy ——————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Russell http://EzineArticles.com/?Proper-Usage-of-Essential-Oils&id=113012 ambien discount ambien day next ambien withdrawal symptoms free consultation cheapest ambien generic

Employees’ Poor Performance Is A Matter of History Where 60% is Viewed as Success

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Leanne Hoagland-Smith Recently I come across the following scale in a national research report to grade each states education performance within numerous areas. Do you see anything questionable about this scale? Grading Curve: A (93-100), A- (90-92), B+ (87-89), B (83-86), B- (80-82), C+ (77-79), C (73-76), C- (70-72), D+ (67-69), D (63-66), D- (60-62), F (0-59) If you arent scratching your head yet, please allow me ask another question. If you are an employer, a human resource or a quality control manager what expectations do you have toward the performance of your employees? In other words, do you expect your employees to know 50%, 60%, 75%, 80%, 90% or 100% of their job skills or job description? At what level of knowledge and years on the job, would you consider that employees performance to be sub-standard and would not entitle her or him to a promotion or a raise and might be within the area of specific discipline strategies from suspension to termination? Now you might be thinking what is this lady talking about. Common sense dictates that every employee should know at least 75% or 3 out of every 4 requirements of their job and within a certain time frame progress to 100%. Errors are costly in business and employees errors are extremely expensive as they have a cascade affect within the organization. Even though the above scale is for a national research report on education in America, this scale is present in many classrooms throughout this country. What has happened is that the low expectations within the classroom have migrated up and now are affecting research organizations that consider 60% as passing. F is failing and everything above F is passing. From a simple performance perspective, if we dont fail, we have success because success has been defined at 60%. These low expectations have contributed to the low results that have been documented through such research as the National Assessment of Educational Progress where for example reading scores collectively for 17 year olds over the course of 33 years have not changed. The high standards of 40 plus years ago where anything less than 75% was failing are non-existent in the majority (that being over 50%) American schools. NOTE: As a former school board trustee, I continually fought to raise the bar to 75% as passing, but that outraged teachers, parents and students who argued such standards would prevent the students from playing sports. For playing sports was no longer a privilege, but a right. Many young people experience 12 years of conditioning where doing less than your personal best is OK. And guess what? You even get rewarded by a promotion to the next grade. How cool is that? Now, these same young people go into the workforce with a belief that it is OK to just get by as long as you dont fail. During my 20 years in management, I saw this on a regular basis with many of our new hires. If we, as business owners, truly desire to improve the performance of todays employees, we need to raise the standards within both the schools and the organizations that report on the schools and states performance. Until we stop this cycle of mediocrity, we will continue to receive employees who expect the world without working hard at acceptable levels of performance. And these employees will continue to view 60% as success. Leanne helps individuals, small businesses and large organizations to double performance in real time. Can We Still Be Friends

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Graham Billingham Life is really not like the movies. If peoples life was like the movies then every persons love life would be pretty healthy. There would be no unhappy endings. Lets face, life is not like the movies. If theres anything in life that resembles movies its the nightmarish things that happen in the middle of movies. I say this because of some endings in movies where relationships end and one party asks if they could still be friends. In the movie world it can still work out, in the real world it just might be a dream. When your ex asks if you too can still be friends after the relationship, it would make you think a lot. Do you think that this is really possible? It might make you sit back a moment and think very well. But why in the world or how your friendship can last when everything you had in your relationship just broke down. So when an ex ask that question it might only be polite to say sure why not. But deep inside both of you know that it might be hard to be good friends again. That expression is just used as a consolation prize for the dumping you had. People who ask and say yes to these things do not really mean what they are saying. How can both of you be good friends when you have some bitterness? Maybe if the relationship has ended without the bitterness and with common consent. Even though, this will still be hard especially for the first couple of months, because being with the person will make you remind of some stuff that could have and have not been. It would be hard to make these new-ex friendship work really. This may also happen to persons who have just had a crash and burn during their first couple of dates. When one party thinks you are getting lame, he or she may only say, its best we stay as friends. Yeah right! How can both of you be friends if you are not able to go out, talk or have fun most of the time. A friend is a person you develop your trust through time. What happens during that time is that you only became acquaintances and not friends. So its pretty stupid too make the other party be on the expecting end. It might happen on some rare occasions. But it would need a whole lot of work, where you would need to remove the emotional baggage. It might also work if you get some Hollywood magic. Business Background Check - It Pays to Know Someone Else’s Business

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Matthew Bass So what is business background check really all about? The following report includes some fascinating information about business background check–info you can use, not just the old stuff they used to tell you. Youve got work to do and have to hire a business to do it. Whether it is a contractor to work on home improvement projects or you plan to build a swimming pool, you want to make sure you pick the right business to do the job for you. That is why a business background check will help you in your decision. You can find out if the company you are dealing with is a fly-by-night type of operation or a company with integrity. If you have got the time and patience, you can conduct your own business background check. The internet holds all sorts of information, just waiting to be discovered. However, you have to know where to look. The most common place to start is your local Better Business Bureau, especially if it is a locally owned business. The Better Business Bureau can help you verify the companys address and company officers. As part of your business background check, they can also tell you if there have been complaints against the company and if the issues were resolved or not. Another step in your business background check is typing a simple search in an internet search engine. You can find any mention of the company you want to do business with, from their accomplishments to financial information. If you have the companys Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), you can find out much more in your quest for a business background check. For instance, that number could be run through the Secretary of State website and you can find out about the companys officers, financial information and incorporation information. You can find out if the company had done business under another name too. Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following: The Federal Employer Identification Number can also be run through Dun and Bradstreets database to find out even more financial information. Armed with your newfound knowledge, you can make a big dent into your business background check. Now, you can find out a bunch of information on your own as well as pay nominal fees for access into certain databases. Or, you can hire an investigator or an online corporation who specializes in the business background check. So how do you know if THAT online business is trustworthy? Look for the online Better Business Bureau emblem on their website. What information do you really need to ensure that the company is one you want to do business with? In the business background check, you can find out if the company pays their taxes on time. Have they ever been sued for some type of business malpractice? What is their work ethic? How do they treat their employees? Do they have proper licensing to conduct business? With a business background check, you can determine all that information and more. Just remember, you have only yourself to blame if the business you conduct with this company without going through all the business background check procedures bombs out and you lose money. It pays in the long run to spend forth the time and effort now in a business background check. There’s no doubt that the topic of business background check can be fascinating. If you still have unanswered questions about business background check, you may find what you’re looking for in the next article. How to Tell if a Person is a True Friend

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Tristan Loo Dear Tristan, Im so frustrated about friends. I trusted someone who I thought was a good friend of mine and I ended up getting used. I really cant tell who is really a friend and who is just fake and trying to use me. I once trusted my own judgment, but nowIm not so sure. Can you please help me? ~Dan M. Hello Dan, Youre not alone. Most people, including myself have this same challenge of weeding out the good from the bad in people that we know. In my own case, I am an amiable personality type, which means that I am somewhat shy and compassionate towards the emotions of others and as such, I am by nature more susceptible to manipulation than others. The word friend has very different meanings to each person and its the overuse of this word that causes problems. In many such cases, we have simply forgotten what true friendship really is. Personally, I have very few true friends, perhaps only two or three at the most. Thats because a true friend as I define it is someone who would stop their own daily routine to come to help me despite the fact that there was no incentive or quite possibly even risk or pain to do so. That is true friendship to me and it falls right up there with a level of love that is as powerful as the bond of a family. Very few people I know meet these criteria. Dan, you didnt specify if this friend was a guy or a girl, but seeing that you selected used as your victimized verbiage, Ill take a leap and say that this friend was a girl. When dealing with opposite-sex friendships, things become more complicated, mainly because of perceived, assumed, or potential love-relationships forming for one person or both. And we all know that once you fall for a guy or a girl, youre no longer thinking with your rational mind, but rather with your emotional one. The simple question that you must ask yourself when engaging in any relationship, plutonic or love, is this: Do they have your best interests in their heartor do they have their own? Well, then you might ask, How am I suppose to know that? There are some simple tests that you can perform to see if your friend is truly a friend from the heart, or someone who is just out to get what they want from you. 1. Self-Sacrifice. You may do everything to help her out, but if you need help, would she give you back the same level of help that you extended to her? If the answer is no, then be careful. 2. Genuine Time-Sharing. This is an important one because its a test of the true synergy in a friendship. When you spend time together, are you spending time just to enjoy each others company and companionship? or do you find that you only spend time together when your friend needs help or something from you? If the answer is the latter, then be carefulthis is a sign of a manipulator. 3. Honesty. This again is another big one on the list because it signifies the level of interpersonal connectedness of the relationship. A true friend will tell you personal things, with complete trust that you will not use it against them later. Also a true friend will not keep things from you even though it is something that they might not want to hear. 4. Interest. How interested is the other person about your life? If you are doing something important, do they call and follow up with you? If they dont seem interested about you or your life at all, then be careful. 5. Integrity. Personally, with the friends that I have, this is what I am known for. Integrity is your ability to keep your word and do as you say you will. Ive noticed that with fake friends, their integrity level is not so high. If they say they will call you tomorrow and dont, then that is a lack of integrity. If they say they will do something and either forget or more infamous the Im too busy today, line then they lack integrity. On the note of busy, in my time management courses, I tell people that so much can be done on a given day and it just comes down to proper planning and priorities. When I hear someone tell me that they are too busy or that they forgot to call, then I rarely believe that is the truth. What I hear instead, is that I am not as important as other things in their life right now, so that is a red-flag to me that they are not a true friend because their level of integrity is poor. I hope this advice helps. For Passionate Life and Success!!
